Expanding frontiers of technology in higher education enables the massive use of multimedia in traditional classrooms. In English classes, instructors tend to use videos as teaching materials to engage students’ attention and interest, trying to improve students’ learning outcomes eventually. Videos tools poises both opportunities and challenges to teaching and learning, however, its full function as an effective teaching approach has not been realized completely. Based on an survey on English learners in a comprehensive university, this current study focuses on students’ attitude and perspectives towards using videos in English classes, including their reasons for supporting or against using video in class; their focus of attention; their preference for the subject matters, durance and subtitles of the videos; their attitude towards activities based on videos, etc. It is hoped that with the findings of this study, instructors may have a better understanding on the needs of students, thus using videos in technology assisted English classes could be more effective and efficient.
