Toni Morrison, as an Afro-American female writer, has been widely appreciated for her representation of African American community groups and nuanced description of complex human relationships. Among numerous works of hers, Sula is a great manifestation which reveals the oppressive nature of binary thinking and reinforces the fluidity of human experience. By deconstructing several pairs of binary oppositions in spatial hierarchy, emotional dualities, social roles and moral dualities, the thesis strives to reveal how the seemingly divergent conceptions intertwine with each other and how the identical boundaries can be further blurred. By doing so, it seeks to challenge traditional perceptions towards simplistic dichotomies in the society, suggesting the possibilities of embracing complexity and ambiguity in human relationships.
