ABSTRACT

The rules of sports competition is regarded as a new style of language due to its particular field, tenor and mode. However, there is a lack of systemic study of that in language study. So, based on the rule and regulation of Modern Pentathlon, this essay gives a more specific study of the rules of sports competition from the perspective of Halliday’s register theory: the field of discourse, the tenor of discourse, and the mode of discourse. All in all, the language in sports rules and regulations are descriptive, formal and cohesive.
