ABSTRACT

Family education is the earliest and most important form of education. It is crucial in the formation of children's worldviews and cognitive development. With the development of China's social and economic environment continuously evolving, there has been a growing emphasis on family education. However, owing to the lack of systematic theoretical support, reforms often remain superficial. Drawing from Hofstede's Cultural Dimensions Theory, through a comparison of individualism vs. collectivism, long-term orientation vs. short-term orientation, and power distance, differences between the two countries in education objectives, principles, and methods reveal distinctions. Shaped by individualistic cultural values, American families accentuate independent thinking and conduct among the younger generation through family education. Their educational principles also underscores the achievement of the younger generation in the present, with a relatively small power distance between parents and children. Parents in America inclined to rational education and an individual-centric educational objectives. A cross-cultural comparison on family education between the two countries aims to help China's family educators recognize the disparities, learn from strengths and make improvements, draw excellent educational principles and approaches, and infuse new vitality and resources to create a conductive environment for the holistic development of children.
