ABSTRACT

This paper delves into the multifaceted implications of the concept of equivalence in philosophy, which serve as a robust cornerstone for the formulation of dictionary definitions. Within this framework, the author envisions bilingual dictionary-making as an intricate blend of translation and lexicography, endeavoring to offer tentative yet insightful responses to four pivotal questions surrounding equivalence in bilingual lexicography. Central to this discussion is the fourfold classification of equivalence types, whose untapped potential holds immense value in fulfilling users' cognitive needs during the dictionary-consulting process.
